Rideau Canal by the Pretoria Bridge / Le canal Rideau près du pont Pretoria

I didn't want to let winter slip by without making another painting of the Rideau Canal skateway in downtown Ottawa. The skateway is such a beautiful icy promenade that winds its way through the city for about 10 km. It has no equivalent in the entire world. (And I'm not exaggerating either.) You can skate on it or just take a (slippery) stroll on it. There are warm-up cabins along the route as well as places where you can get a hot chocolate or some food. This scene is from a pedestian walkway overlooking the Pretoria Bridge and old Ottawa East. The trees here have alway impressed me; they might have been growing in the same spot when the canal was built in the 1830s! The bridge also impressed me when I was a child - it looked like part of a castle drawbridge. Probably kids today have the same impression.

Je ne voulais pas laisser passer l'hiver sans faire un autre tableau de la patinoire du canal Rideau au centre-ville d'Ottawa. La patinoire est une belle promenade glacial qui serpente à travers la ville pour environ 10 km. Il n'a pas d'équivalent dans le monde entier. (Et je ne fais pas une exagération non plus.) Vous pouvez patiner ou tout simplement prendre un (glissante) marche sur elle. Il y a des cabanes d'échauffement le long de la route ainsi que les endroits où vous pouvez obtenir un chocolat chaud ou un peu de nourriture. Cette scène est d'une passage pour piétons donnant sur le pont Pretoria et vieux Ottawa-Est. Ici, les arbres m'ont toujours impressionné ; ils auraient pu être en croissance dans le même endroit lorsque le canal a été construit dans les années 1830! Le pont m'a aussi impressionné quand je suis un enfant - il ressemblait à une partie d'un pont-levis du château. Probablement les enfants d'aujourd'hui ont la même impression.

Skating entrance to the Rideau Canal / Entrée du Canal Rideau pour patiner

Another skating season on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa is now but a memory. Oh, but what a memory! This winter the temperature was 4 C higher than normal with 20% less snowfall - ideal conditions for skating. The scene I painted was at one of the entrances to the canal near the University of Ottawa, just next to a pedestrian bridge.

Une autre saison de patinage sur le Canal Rideau à Ottawa est maintenant plus qu'un souvenir. Mais quel souvenir! Cette hiver, la température était de 4 C plus élevée que la normale avec des chutes de neige 20 p.c. de moins - des conditions idéales pour le patinage. La scène de cette peinture est situé à l'une des entrées du canal près de l'Université d'Ottawa, juste à côté d'un pont pour piétons.

Sunny winter morning on canal / Matin d'hiver ensoleillée au bord du canal

The outdoor skating season on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa will soon be over for another year. This winter has been milder than normal with relatively little snowfall. Conditions on the canal, however, have been pretty good. This scene looks north towards the Laurier Street Bridge, the Parliament Buildings, the Château Laurier and the Gatineau Hills. I took a walk one morning and was struck by the beauty of this panorama with the sun streaming through the trees over the frozen canal. I've been working on this oil painting for a few weeks and feel that its completed now.

La saison de patinage en plein air sur le canal Rideau, à Ottawa, sera bientôt fini pour une autre année. Cet hiver a été plus doux que la normale avec des chutes de neiges relativement peu. Les conditions sur le canal, cependent, ont été plutôt bonnes. Cette scène s'etend vers le nord vers le pont de la rue Laurier, les édifices du Parlement, le Château Laurier, et les collines de Gatineau. Je me suis promené un matin et j'étais frappé par la beauté de ce panorama, avec le soleil qui brillait à travers les arbres sur le canal gelé. J'ai travaillé sur cette peinture à huile pendant quelques semaines et je sens que c'est maintenant terminé.

Skating early morning / Patiner le matin

Another quick watercolour sketch. This is a scene one morning when the sunlight cast long blue shadows over the ice. On the Rideau Canal, there are skaters of all ages and all skill levels, each one enjoying the special pleasure it gives you to breathe crisp air and to glide over the well-kept ice surface.

Un autre croquis à l'aquarelle rapide. Il s'agit d'un scène un matin quand le soleil a projetté de longues ombres bleues sur la glace. Sur le Canal Rideau, il y a des patineurs de tous âges et des différentes habiletés, chaque personne jouissant du plaisir à respirer l'air douce et de glisser sur la surface bien entretenue.

 Here's an oil painting of a watercolour sketch that I posted recently. I find it interesting to compare mediums and to see the changes that have been introduced. My oil painting took several more hours to complete than the watercolour sketch - but to be fair, the watercolour was only intended as a quick sketch of the scene; something to get my creative juices going.
As for the Rideau Canal, I'm always amazed at its expanse at this spot - it's like a huge lake. When you're skating there alone on a weekday, its like the whole world is one big skating rink!

Voici une peinture à l'huile d'une esquisse en aquarelle que j'ai publié récemment. Je trouve intéressant de comparer les deux peintures pour voir les modifications qui ont été introduites. Ma peinture à l'huile a pris plusieurs heures de plus que l'aquarelle - mais pour être juste, l'aquarelle a été conçu uniquement comme une esquisse rapide de la scène; quelque chose pour m'inspirer.
Concernant le canal Rideau, je suis toujours étonné de l'étendue du canal à cet endroit - c'est comme un immense lac. Quand vous patinez là tout seul en semaine, c'est comme si toute le monde est une grand patinoir!

Lacing-up / Lacer les patins

Now that Winterlude is just around the corner, I thought that I should start working on some more paintings and sketches of skaters on Ottawa's Rideau Canal. This picture is a sketch of people lacing-up their skates outdoors on the canal. Depending on the weather, this can be a daunting task especially if you have some kids that need help in tightening their skates. Once you are laced-up, you can leave your shoes behind in some snowbank or take them along with you in a pack-sack.

Maintenant que le Bal de Neige est presque arrivé, j'ai pensé que je devrais composer des peintures et des croquis de patineurs sur le Canal Rideau à Ottawa. Cette image est une esquisse de personnes qui sont en traine de lacer leurs patins en plein air sur le canal. Selon le temps, cela peut être une tâche ardue, surtout si vous avez des enfants qui ont besoin d'aide. Une fois que vous êtes lacée, vous pouvez laisser vos chaussures dans un banc de neige ou les prendre avec vous dans un pack-sack.

Ottawa-Gatineau's winter festival, known as Winterlude, begins this upcoming weekend and continues every weekend in the month of February. The focal point of the festival is certainly skating on the Rideau Canal - the largest outdoor skating surface in the universe! This year has been especially cold so far ... which is good for skating. The canal has already been opened for the last three weeks and is a perfect way to spend the day. This scene is from one of my favourite areas, Patterson Creek. I have already posted some other paintings of this area from different perspectives. It never ceases to attract me. Le festival d'hiver de la region Ottawa-Gatineau, connu sous le nom de Bal de neige, débute ce week-end prochain et continue tous les week-ends du mois de février. Le point d'intérêt de ce festival est certainement le patinage sur le canal Rideau - la plus grande patinoire en plein air dans l'univers! Cette année a été particulièrement froide ... ce qui est bon pour le patinage. Le canal est ouvert depuis les trois dernières semaines et est un moyen idéal pour passer la journée. Cette scène est d'un de mes endroits préférés, le Ruisseau Patterson. J'ai déjà publié d'autres œuvres de cette endroit à partir de différentes perspectives. Rideau Canal skateway and the Lady Aberdeen Pavillion / Le patinoir du Canal Rideau et le Pavillon Lady Aberdeen

There are a lot of interesting sites along the Rideau Canal skating rink (in Ottawa, Ontario). One of them is the Lady Aberdeen Pavillion at Lansdowne Park named in honour of the wife of a former Governor General in 1898. Locally, the building is known as the Cattle Castle because it was used in agricultural fairs for many years. The building has been renovated and is now used for trade shows and other large gatherings. Acrylic, 16 x 20 inches (40.6 cm x 51 cm).

Il y a plusieurs endroits intéressants au longue de la patinoir du Canal Rideau (à Ottawa, Ontario). L'un d'eux est le Pavillon Lady Aberdeen au Parc Lansdowne. Le pavillon porte le nom de l'epouse d'un ancien gouverneur général depuis 1898. Localement, il est connue comme le château de bovins parce qu'il était utilisé pour les expositions d'agricole dans le passé. L'édifice a été renové et aujourd'hui il est utilisé pour les salons d'exposition. Acrylique, 16 x 20 pouces (40.6 cm x 51 cm).

It was an overcast day on the canal but still very bright. An unusual combination. This is how I captured the scene around Lansdowne Park (Ottawa, Canada) on the largest outdoor skating rink in the world -- the distinction for the longest now goes to Winnipeg (Manitoba). As I mentioned in my previous post, Ottawa-Gatineau's Winterlude Festival begins this Friday. I hope that the weather gets cold so that the skateway stays open!

Le ciel était couvert mais la journée était lumineuse quand même. Un drôle de combination. Voici le scène au Parc Lansdowne (Ottawa, Canada) sur la plus grande patinoire extérieure du monde -- la plus longue patinoire est maintenant à Winnipeg (Manitoba). Comme je l'ai mentionné dans mon dernier message, le Bal de neige d'Ottawa-Gatineau commence ce vendredi. J'espère que le temps se refroidit pour garder la patinoire ouverte!

Patterson's Creek is part of the Rideau Canal in downtown Ottawa. It's a small appendage that takes you into an upscale neighbourhood known as the Glebe. Sometimes it's nice to get off the main thoroughfare where most of the skaters are found and spend some time in this small but quaint little corner. Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inches.

Le ruisseau Patterson fait parti du Canal Rideau à Ottawa. C'est une section du canal qui vous amène dans une voisinage chic reconnue comme le Glebe. Des fois c'est convenable de sortir de la partie du canal très passante et de passer un moment calme dans cette petite mais pittoreque coin. Aquarelle, 15.5 x 12 pouces.

This is the world's largest skating rink (about 7 km in length) and has been operating for 25 years. You can skate at your own pace even when there are thousands of people on the ice as there's always plenty of space to do your own thing! Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inches.

Notre festival d’hiver – Le Bal de neige – est maintenant terminé et le patinage sur le Canal Rideau à Ottawa (Ontario) sera bientôt fini pour une autre année. Cette patinoire est la plus grande au monde (elle est 7 km longue) et a fonctionné pour les 25 derniers hivers. Vous pouvez patiner à votre propre vitesse, même quand il y a des milliers des gens sur le canal, car il reste toujours beaucoup de place. Aquarelle, 15.5 x 12 pouces.
