At this time of year, large flocks of Canada geese fly over the Ottawa-Gatineau region returning to their summer homes far to the north. They are truly impressive creatures. One evening when the full moon had risen, I had the idea for this painting and was able to complete it in one session alla prima.
This is an oil painting that I began a while back. Because of other chores that came along, I never got around to finish it. I'm hoping by now posting it on my blog that I'll be stimulated enough to continue this work-in-progress. Oil painting, 26 x 20 inches (66 x 51 cm).
In our backyard, we have a small birdbath that's surrounded by bright yellow sundrop flowers. These perennials seem to grow well in almost any location and give a strong punch of colour to any garden. The flowers around my birdbath are really a tangled collection of bee balm, asters and sundrops but they do look attractive when in bloom. This is a quick sketch. Watercolour, 7.5 x 7.5 inches (19 x 19 cm)
It was a bright warm March day, so I visited an area nearby called Limbour where there are rapids in the Gatineau River that are quite lively at this time of year. When I returned home, I created a quick sketch from photos I had taken. Perhaps I exaggerated the colour of the river, but it really was an incredibly deep blue - the kind that you get when the skies are clear and the water is fresh and icy-cold, not like on a smoggy hot afternoon in the summer. Sometimes a little exaggeration captures our impressions more accurately. Anyway, a couple of weeks later I finished this painting of the same scene. Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inches (39 x 30 cm).
