After more than 33 years, I've retired from a career at the Canadian Parliament as a procedural clerk. In looking back, I can say that it was a very special place to work, an environment with a lot of dedicated individuals working within the fabric of history but anchored in the reality of present day pressures. Over the past years, I've painted a few scenes of "the Hill" - like the one above. This one tries to evoke the quiet calm in front of the Centre Block after a late-night sitting. Watercolour, 15.5 x 11.5 inches (39 x 29 cm).My paintings in watercolour, acrylic and oil - Mes peintures en aquarelle, acrylique et huile. White swans on the Rideau / Les cygnes blancs de la rivière Rideau
After 18 months in captivity, Ottawa's royal swans will be set free on the Rideau River this week. I composed this watercolour in 2005 when I noticed them while cycling on a path nearby. They were peacefully feeding in the rich waters of the river. I look forward to seeing them again this year. Aquarelle, 15,5 x 12 pouces (39 x 30 cm).

Flowers / Fleurs

Now that we've finally made it to beautiful month of May, I thought that it would be interesting to present a couple of paintings I've created of cannas and gladiolus. Watercolours, 9 x 12 inches (22 x 30 cm).

Brewery Creek winds itself around the old part of the city of Hull (now the city of Gatineau, Quebec). The creek is fed by the Ottawa River at a point just above the roaring Chaudière Falls and flows back again into the Ottawa River several miles downstream. It got its name from a real brewery that used to be located on its banks. Although there are proposals for a small micro-brewery to return to the original location, chances are slim. Brewery Creek is also appreciated by birders and other urban wildlife enthusiasts for its abundant waterfowl and turtles. Civilization.ca has a short interesting history of Brewery Creek. My painting portrays the creek at the beginning of spring when the ice still holds on and the skies are swept with lively clouds. Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inches (39 x 30 cm).
Aquarelle, 15.5 x 12 pouces (39 x 30 cm).

Giant willows / Des immenses saules
Here is a painting of some gigantic willow trees that grow near the Rideau Canal (in Ottawa). Although they aren't as old as the canal (built in the 1830s), they must have began their life a few decades after it was completed. Watercolur, 15.5 x 12 inchesThursday, March 8, 2007
Skating at Patterson's Creek / Patiner à la ruisseau Patterson
Patterson's Creek is part of the Rideau Canal in downtown Ottawa. It's a small appendage that takes you into an upscale neighbourhood known as the Glebe. Sometimes it's nice to get off the main thoroughfare where most of the skaters are found and spend some time in this small but quaint little corner. Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inches. Aquarelle, 15.5 x 12 pouces.

On the road to Mont Cascades / Sur le chemin à Mont Cascades
Here's a plein air painting I did a while back. The scene is on a road leading to a popular ski hill north of Gatineau (Quebec). The difficulty in painting with watercolours in winter is that sometimes the paint freezes on your paper (at the same time your fingers freeze) creating strange effects. Watercolour, 10 x 15 inches. Aquarelle, 10 x 15 pouces.

Early spring flood / Inondation printanière
On northern lakes, there's a period early in spring when the snow and ice begins to slowly melt. Pools of water collect on top of the ice and sometimes create new shorelines. The landscape is still predominately winter, but the end is in sight. This painting illustates that special season.

Aquarelle, 15,5 x 12 pouces.

Sliding at Rockliffe Park /Glisser au parc Rockliffe

Sparrows in the late fall / Les moineaux en automne
You have to admire the lowly sparrow. When most birds have long left the Ottawa-Gatineau region for warmer climes, sparrows stick around and seem to pay little attention to the darkening days and chilling temperatures. Maybe we should name them the national bird instead of the Canada Goose! Anyway, I was attracted by a group of them outside my window and wanted to pay them homage through this painting.Monday, November 6, 2006
Ghostly trees in late fall / Les arbres fantôme de l'automne
Maybe this is just an after-effect of Halloween, but here's a watercolour that I composed of some ghostly looking trees with bare limbs in late autumn. Watercolour, 15.5 x 12 inchesFriday, October 27, 2006

Aquarelle, 12 x 9 pouces.

Kayaking in the bay / Le kayak dans la baie
The kayak is a great way to explore lakes and rivers. In my opinion, it takes a lot less effort to manouever than a canoe and is less tipsy. Plus, its more comfortable to sit inside a kayak than to kneel inside a canoe. This is another painting at Lac Roddick (Bouchette, Quebec) on a day when the sky and water are a brilliant blue and you could spend all day playing on the water. Watercolour, 14 x 11 inches. Aquarelle, 14 x 11 pouces.
